Blog Post 100 – 2013 in review

Hi All,

It is fitting that the 100th blog post would fall at the end of a momentous year for the Connected Community HackerSpace (CCHS). Its been a year of change and growth as we navigated our way through the growing pains of establishing a premier hackerspace for Melbourne. I say with no exaggeration we are the finest independent destination for Hackers, Makers, Inventors and Tinkerers to achieve their goals anywhere the greater Melbourne region. As you might expect, I have some thanks for the people who got us there.

First, to our members, you are our rock, our stable foundation and without your good company and contribution of time, materials and skills we would not exist. It is your space and  you should be very proud to be members of such an institution, our reputation now precedes us, we have been publicly described by others as “exemplary members of the Melbourne maker community” and it is the strength of your character and your willingness to educate others that have gotten us there. I hope you wear your CCHS membership with pride because I think you should.

Secondly I want to thank our Duty Officers and those members who have taken it upon themselves to give time and material to enhance the operation of the space. Without these people the doors would not open, the tools would not be maintained and upgraded, new tools wouldn’t appear in the space, they are quite often donating tons of time outside of their regular attendance to make the space better for everyone and they are to be congratulated for their community spirit. Make sure you buy them a drink sometime.

Thirdly! A special mention to those who manned tables at events such as Eurisko, Comic Con, The 3D printing showcase and to those who did any sort of community outreach. All members should feel welcome to grab some business cards and do some recruitment for our shared success.

Lastly but not least, I want to thank the Committee, through their good stewardship the space is paying its bills, covered by insurance, compliant with the law and overall successful. They also deserve much appreciation for the sheer amount of personal time they donate to the space. In particular I want to call out our treasurer Bob Powers, his diligence this year has been exemplary.

Happy Hacking, Be Safe and All the best for the new year to you all.

David Chanter – President.

Now onto regular business:

Here’s an update from the Thursday Circuits & PCBs group this week.   Each session we get a whole lot better at making boards.   In 2014 I expect the first thing we do each Thursday will be to combine designs onto a double sided panel, and make up a batch of boards for people to work on during the session.
